The fiberglass chairs were intentionally designed in 1948 by Charles and Ray Eames for the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design. This competition, sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art, was motivated by the urgent need in the post-war period for low-cost housing and furnishing designs adaptable to small housing units. This offered chair is from the Herman Miller/Zenith production in 1957 (see embosses Z marking on underside of the fiberglass shell as well as the patents label and the factory stamp). This chair is in its exact original condition since its production in 1957.
It does contain the original Herman Miller patents label and the embossed producer marking. The chair is whit its all original rocking base. All parts are original and no breaks are present nor rewelds or repairs have been done. The beautiful, homogenous and nice parchment colour fiberglass shell is in a extraordinary nice vintage condition. It is nearly perfect and still contains its nice gloss and is free from any breaks or structural damages. A minor, very minimal patina tells about the many years of this chairs life. The four shock mounts are slightly minimal visible through the shell. The shock mounts are dry and partly broken away.
The chair still works fine but should be treated and used with care. Please refer to the pictures provided. This is an extraordinary example of American design history in an amazingly beautiful and all original condition. More pictures are available upon request.
